Multi-partner Quantum City outreach initiative relaunches with new vision

Quantum City, the public engagement initiative representing the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme, has relaunched today with a redeveloped website, updated resources and a new strategy aimed at highlighting training opportunities and career pathways for the sector. Designed for a wide range of audiences, Quantum City makes quantum science and technology accessible, engaging and relevant.

Funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, part of UK Research and Innovation, Quantum City is a collaboration developed by the network of UK Quantum Technology Hubs. Working in partnership with other key stakeholders, including the National Physical Laboratory and the National Quantum Computing Centre, it brings together expertise from across the national quantum landscape to showcase the potential of these emerging technologies and their societal benefits.

“Quantum Technology not only excites the imagination with all the wonderful insights it generates into our understanding of the fundamental world, but also presents new capabilities in quantum sensing, imaging, communication and quantum computing of great societal and economic value. Quantum City is a tremendous resource to inspire the next generation and the general public and will be warmly welcomed by all. Take a look at their activities: it’s enthralling!”
— Sir Peter Knight, National Quantum Technologies Programme Strategic Advisory Board Chair

Quantum technologies offer capabilities unmatched or even unattainable by their classical equivalents. From tackling climate change and improving healthcare to strengthening security, transport, and communications, including via satellites in space, quantum technologies are unlocking new ways to solve complex challenges and create a more sustainable, connected, and resilient future. The UK has long been a leader in research development in the field, and this status was cemented in 2014 with the inception of the National Quantum Technologies Programme, a multi-billion-pound partnership across government, academia and industry, aiming to create the foundations for a quantum-enabled economy.

Ultimately, Quantum City hopes to evolve into the leading destination for showcasing the quantum breakthroughs that make our lives easier, healthier and more sustainable. It will become a platform to inspire the future generation of quantum talent, helping them to develop the skills needed to contribute to, and benefit from, the next quantum revolution.

“Quantum City provides a platform to showcase the breakthroughs emerging from the UK’s quantum community and opens doors for the diverse range of people who will shape its future.

Whether you’re a student considering your career options or simply curious about the technology that could change our everyday lives, this relaunch makes the quantum sector more accessible than ever before.”
— Lydia Gardner, Joint Head of Quantum Technologies, EPSRC

Through a collaborative approach, accessible website and rich programme of engagement activities, Quantum City will highlight case studies, develop training resources, signpost a diverse range of quantum-related careers, promote relevant events, and offer insights from across the UK’s vibrant quantum ecosystem.

Quantum City will be unveiling its new look and exhibiting at New Scientist Live this weekend. Taking place at Excel London from 10–12 October, the festival attracts tens of thousands of science enthusiasts, aspiring innovators and school pupils, offering a unique opportunity to discover the science and technologies shaping our future. Come and visit us at Stand N30.
